Finalizamos o nível 4 deste curso esta semana e o feedback foi excelente. Também inicamos um novo nível 1 (completamente cheio) e também houve um elevado grau de satisfação. O Prof. Rocabado voltará ao nosso país no próximo ano. Aguardem novidades...

It was in Montreal during 1974 that Mariano Rocabado, unregistered as is typical in much of South America, arrived at my ten-day seminar on the spine and extremities and asked to be admitted. "I know the class is full, but I have come all the way from Chile," he stated. The sincerity of the man was not lost on me and so, he was admitted.

Two days into the program, I outlined what we would cover the following day. "The shoulder, elbow, wrist hand, and TMJ." "How much time for the TMJ?" he inquired to which I replied "Ten minutes--that's all it takes." After class, he told me that he took more than two full days to instruct on the basics of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Therefore, I said I would give him thirty minutes toward the end of the next day. He took two hours, going well overtime, but no one left and I did not stop him for everyone was fascinated by his knowledge, understanding, and presentation style. When the class was over, he invited us all to the back of the room, where he had prepared Pisco Sours, a Chilean concoction for all to enjoy. How could I compete with this man?

Recognizing his talent, I invited him to join my staff and faculty at the Atlanta Back Clinic, and what was to become the University of St. Augustine. After a short period of time, he set up a Headache and Facial Pain Clinic where he mentored others until his return to Chile some two years later. His brief stay left an indelible mark on physical therapy and its role in craniomandibular therapy, not only in the United States but as we all appreciate, in many countries around the world. It is appropriate that CRANIO has chosen here to recognize Dr. Mariano Rocabado's contribution to the treatment of temporomandibular joint treatment.

Today, physical therapy is a doctoring profession, with all new graduates in the United States earning the D.P.T. That we have become a doctoring profession is largely because of the likes of Dr. Mariano Rocabado, who developed the advanced body of knowledge and skills unique to our profession, and thus freed us from medical control and prescription to the point where today, patients increasingly have direct access to our services.

While Dr. Rocabado has developed craniomandibular therapy, he has also shown all of us how to work across the disciplines of medicine, dentistry, and radiology in a search to bring the best possible care to our patients. When professionalism controls and jealousies are placed aside, and we each refer to the best person to do the job rather than delegate to our own subordinate staff, it is our patients who benefits most, and the profession gains yet further respect.

Mariano Rocabado has been my student, my colleague, my mentor, and most importantly, he and his wife Elena are my friends. Thank you Mariano for showing us the way.
