Functional Manual Therapy for the Complex Lumbar Patient
State of the Art Integration of Manual Therapy techniques for the treatment of Mechanical, Neuromuscular, and Motor Control Dysfunctions

Begins: 16 October 2010

Teachers:
Gregory Scott Johnson
Vicky Saliba Johnson

Duration: 2 days

Place: Lisbon (Portugal)

International Partner:
The Institute of Physical Art: http://www.ipaconed.com/ (http://www.ipaconed.com/)

Course overview:
Don’t miss this opportunity, for the first time in Portugal/Spain, to learn from Gregory S. Johnson, PT and Vicky Saliba Johnson, PT, nationally renowned clinical specialist and educators in the United States for over 32 years.

Gregory S. Johnson is best known for his identification of the need for Physical Therapists to integrate treatment of the facial system into manual therapy in the early 1980’s and the development of the first Soft Tissue Mobilization course for Physical Therapists. In addition, Mr. Johnson utilized his extensive background in PNF to adapt standard manual therapy techniques of Joint Mobilization and develop the dynamic techniques of Functional Mobilization and Functional High Velocity Release (Functional HVR) techniques for joints, soft tissues, and neurovascular restrictions.

Vicky Saliba Johnson is best known for her innovative approach to Back Education and Training which emphasizes the automatic activation of the core through dynamic postures and movement. This active Proprioceptive and Kinesthetic training teaches the patient to utilize principles of alignment and weight acceptance to facilitate the core to respond with appropriate strength and endurance to the demands of gravity and movement. Active Functional Stabilization takes the concept of core activation beyond the ultrasound and drawing in maneuver to the inherent neuro-reflexive system which facilitated our normal growth and development.

During the two day course, Functional Manual Therapy for the Complex Lumbar Patient, you will learn:
· Pre and Post Functional Test to determine the necessity of intervention and validate the choice of manual therapy intervention
· Functional Mobilization and Functional High Velocity Release techniques for the treatment of identified soft tissue, joint, and neurovascular restrictions identified in the lumbar patient
· Assessment tools for determining if the inefficient core response is due to lack of a neuromuscular (initiation, strength, or endurance) deficiency or if the lack of core response is a motor control issue
· Functional Stabilization techniques that will facilitate the automatic activation of the core
· Neuromuscular facilitation techniques that will promote a contraction of the core through manual resistance and the revolutionary “tonic spread” facilitation technique

Course Objectives:

1. The participant will learn two Functional Test for the evaluation of a patient's automatic core function and correlate these findings to current research

2. The participant will learn to predict a patient's core response through the assessment of posture and functional movement patterns

3. The participant will learn techniques of training to facilitate appropriate posture and motor control which promote the automatic activation of the patient's core during functional ADL.

4. The participant will learn to assess mechanical restrictions in the joints and soft tissue which can limit the assumption of an efficient posture or which can prevent efficient movement

5. The participant will learn Functional Mobilization techniques to treat the identified restrictions in the lumbar spine and pelvis

Course Outline:
· Overview of Functional Manual Therapy and the interrelationship between the mechanical, neuromuscular, and motor control systems.
· Presentation of objective evaluation procedures for predicting the core response in a patient
· Presentation of two functional test to evaluate the ability of the patient to automatically activate the core
· Presentation of evidence to support the role of core control in spine injury prevention and rehabilitation
· Practice of the objective assessment and functional test skills presented
· Demonstration of postural corrections which facilitate the automatic activation of the core
· Participant practice of postural corrections
· Demonstration of weight acceptance techniques to facilitate the automatic activation of the core
· Participant practice of weight acceptance techniques
· Demonstration of manual facilitation techniques for activation of the core through resistance
· Demonstration of motor learning techniques for carry over to ADL
· Identification of mechanical restrictions in the joints and soft tissue which can limit the assumption of an efficient posture or which can prevent efficient movement
· Demonstration of Functional Mobilization techniques to treat the identified restrictions in the lumbar spine and pelvis
· Practice of the Functional Mobilization techniques
· Utilization of a class participant as a demonstration of the assessment and treatment skills presented

Some terms you will learn in the course:
Functional Manual Therapy
Functional Mobilization
Functional High Velocity Release
Active Functional Stabilization

Course methodology:
Course will include live demonstrations on participants and extensive lab practice time as well as theoretic presentations.

Who can attend:
Physiotherapists and last grade’s physiotherapy students

Who will benefit the most from this course:
Physiotherapists who have to treat low back patients and what to learn a new evaluation tool and a new therapeutic approach in the manual therapy field that lies in the interrelationship between the mechanical, neuromuscular, and motor control systems.

In July 1978, Gregg and Vicky Johnson developed and established The Institute of Physical Art, a nation-wide continuing education organization. Through this organization, Gregg and Vicky developed and wrote the manuals for eight continuing education courses. They each teach and train faculty 14-16 times a year.

The following professional milestones occurred through this organization:
· The first short-term PNF courses to be taught nation-wide which reflected the teaching of Maggie Knott. (PNFI and PNFII)
· The first biomechanical soft tissue mobilization continuing education courses taught in the physical therapy profession. (Functional Ortho I)
· The first advanced soft tissue mobilization continuing education courses taught in the physical therapy profession. (FOII)
· The first spine education class which combined principles of body mechanics with vigorous exercise routines. (Back Education & Training)
· The introduction of Functional Mobilization upper and lower quadrant courses which integrated soft tissue and joint mobilization with neuromuscular reeducation.
· CFMT: a process in which a physical therapist is extensively trained in manual therapy through eight continuing education courses offered through the IPA and then tested for competency.
· FOC: a process in which a physical therapist or physical therapy assistant is extensively trained in manual therapy through four IPA courses and one basic spine mobilization course and then tested for competency.
· The development and implementation of an APTA / AAOMPT credentials Functional Manual Therapy Fellowship program.
· The development of a Functional Manual Therapy Residency program, currently under review by the APTA for approval.
· The development of a Functional Manual Therapy Foundation, a non profit organization whose mission is to promote education and research in the field of functional manual therapy.
· Continuing education courses for Master's and Doctorate's credit through Hunter College, NY, and Touro College at Bay Shore, NY pending Rocky Mountain University.

The IPA began by offering three courses in 1978 and current offers 100 courses annually. It offers 8 different continuing education courses throughout the United States yearly and contracts with a faculty of over 40 highly successful and recognized Physical Therapists. The IPA employs five administrative personnel to manage the daily activities of the IPA.
